Crazy Today Is Slightly Above Average In A Week

You need to do things that are crazy.  There are many reasons behind this.  Other than being remarkable today, or letting your inner self out, one of the biggest advantages is that what you create will then have enough remarkable qualities to maintain some relevance for a longer period of time.  It will give people their winning item of the day, and will give you experience.  Here I discuss some examples of this.

Think about some of the craziest things you have seen people create or do.  When you first saw them, they got you thinking all kinds of thoughts, like that the person making them was crazy.  Once you got used to them, they almost became the template or foundation for what the next big thing could become.  In the same way, you can set the stage by doing something that pushes your ability, and opens the minds of many people.

A Crazy Amount Of Effort From Mr. Oatmeal

Recently, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal, a comic/designer who has made some very well-drawn posts, has gone crazy with his posting material.  He has put out loads of effort into unique designer-type pictorial messages that relate to the masses.  His material has done very well on the social news site Digg.  While he may have been called crazy by people who thought he was putting out too much effort all at once, he has amassed a huge following thanks to that, and now, after his build-up period, is now above average to what I feel is at least tens of thousands of people.

Bud Went Hard Against An Issue

Another example that comes to mind from a writer is an article Bud from A Boundless World wrote about education.  He attacked the current education system for some of its qualities, and this might have been viewed as too much to try, or crazy to even insinuate, but he put it out there, and although there may have been some backlash, the feedback to it was huge.  Now, looking back, that article can be seen in a new light, as it did make some valid points, and got a lot of people to discuss how they felt the system was broken as well.  It was just crazy enough at the time to be remembered as an above average post today.

Lady Gaga Pushes The Envelope

Lady Gaga also provides a great example of this.  Not to mention her whole career as a valid example, her song “Bad Romance” has a music video that is quite crazy in many ways, and pushes it as far as fashion or wacky scenes.  The first time you see this video, you likely think of it as crazy, or something of that nature.  However, after you see it some number of times, as crazy as the video is, you start to get used to it.

Before you doing something way out of your league, you feel like you might be punished in some way for not staying to your regular material.  One point is that this is not likely to occur in the majority of cases, since there is always someone who supports your boldness, and possibly your concept, and also because the concept of staying in your small zone is bigger in your head than in the public eye.  We see our world as much larger and prominent than others see our world.  We might see ourselves as a leading voice in the world, while many others might just see us as a member of the local city of commerce.  Perspective is a big part of what we think is “crazy”.

Remember that what you think is over-the-top for you might be just enough to give others a good impression of you as a bold individual with something worthwhile to contribute.

Excellent stuff, Armen. This gives me a few ideas ;)

It can often be tough to express yourself fully and be crazy, because I think that is what crazy often is, just being yourself and not being afraid of the reaction or feedback you may get.

Hey Henri.

You sure might be right there. That which is a crazy move to one person is not a big deal to another person.

crazy is good! I’ve found that some of the best times I’ve had have occurred when I didn’t plan anything to happen, stepped outside my comfort zone and got carried away in the moment.

Hi Anthony.

You know it. You don’t plan, or you don’t have something figured out, and then two hours later, you have done something you are very glad for. It’s a cool feeling.

Armen,

Do you not read mine or Scott H Young’s blog?! All three of us have used that picture in a post recently. Crazyyyy

Anyway, stepping out of the comfort zone is all well and good, but only if it’s a true expression of who you are. You shouldn’t be bold for the sake of being bold.

Hey Brett.

Look I can’t keep track of where pictures were used. I had a 10% feeling I had seen the picture somewhere else, but it was too low of a percentage to not use it.

You are right on that boldness note, but I also like to be bold for the sake of being bold, although it isn’t suggested here as something folks should do.

@Brett, perhaps by being bold we can find out who we really are. :)

Hey Gordie.

That’s true. If I want to sum up my various traits, I can just look at the biggest bold actions I took, add them up, and then I can see what my current limit or open-mindedness is at.

True, but what I mean is that you shouldn’t be bold just for the sake of it – you shouldn’t try to impress. That’s just coming off as being a try-hard.

If you want to be bold, deep down, then you should be bold and ignore the fear you face by doing so.

The take home message is to be bold if you truly want to, but otherwise – just be you.

Brett,

Sounds good about your take-home message. Trying to impress others hasn’t worked well for me, so I would agree that being bold for a valued reason is much better. Valid point.

I agree with your message, unless you do something crazy or original there’s no way people will notice you.

Hey Oscar.

Good call there. If there is 100 people wearing a black shirt in a small group, and one person wearing blue, we all think about the person wearing blue, and how he is feeling, and so on. The person who sets themselves apart has a big advantage.

Yeah, people who are set apart has a big advantage. Too often though we fear to rock the boat or trod anywhere that other people hasn’t gone to. We love company. We hate loneliness. at least most of the time. Kudos to crazy innovators who let their voices (and crazy antics, too) be heard. :D

This is true Mighty. Those few who struggle through being different and still put out their voice are the ones who we end up applauding later, for passing the test that others didn’t see.

For every one person who speaks their mind, there might be ten or more who hold back out of fear.

Hey Jonny.

Thanks about the post. The Oatmeal sure has worked very had lately, and has amassed a huge following through Digg and other sources. We see it as a quick rise, but I am certain he was trying other options and attempt for a long while before his current rise.

Hey Armen, crazy post man! I agree that being crazy helps us let loose away from the conventional rules of society. I like your examples from above as it takes a lot of guts to go into crazy mode. I’ve seen some of Lady Gaga’s videos and they are definitely more crazy than usual… but what I like about them is that they’re very creative. Craziness to me stretches the mind and sometimes… we need that in life. :)

Hey Hulbert.

Thanks. If the post is crazy too, then it will remain as slightly average soon enough. The guts it takes is pretty large, but we don’t see that in the finished products. We only see the finished product, and have to remember what it took to put it out.

Her videos sure are creative. Before I attack something I see, I first question what it was like to make it, and then I usually always realize how much effort it took.

We sure do need mind-stretching. Bigger vision makes one person in a group look like a genius, when all it is is that their mind has been expanded in the past, and sees things others don’t.

I absolutely loved this post Armen as it reminded me to get out of my comfort zone more often. Also there is this concept of the fear of our greatness that we all have. I experience this fear very often. So much more comfortable to stay small in my little world. I think it is important to be aware of this fear to be able to consciouslt deal with it.

Hey Lana.

I am glad to hear that and appreciate your thoughts. I am somewhat rarely in my comfort zone by default at this time, but one day I will also look to stay out of it when I am normally in it.

There sure is that fear of our greatness. Some of it is rightfully there. We have large challenges ahead when we go for big things.

Perfect timing Armen, coincides nicely with my latest post, it was a bit crazy but it’s sparked some interested debate. You do have think and act outside the box to start something new sometimes.

Hey Amit.

Good call there. I like that timing matched. It sure is in the ‘bit crazy’ category to put out material such as that. Fitting example, and I had read your article also and thought it related with Bud’s college article in some ways.

It’s worth pushing bounds.

This is true. I will keep this in mind next time I do something crazy or outlandish. Some things I do nowadays were out of my comfort zone long ago, so that is a good sign.

Great post Armen. I honestly had never really thought about the positive side of “being crazy”. I think you are so right though that sometimes it really is about thinking out of the box and perhaps even doing the unexpected. It’s a great reminder to not always take yourself so seriously and to let go from time to time. Sometimes that really is when we create some great things.

Hi Sibyl.

There sure is a positive side to it. I try to do a scary thing each day now. It is important to do, so I figure out something each time.

Everything good I’ve done came from doing something that wasn’t normal to me at first.

Is that you in the photo? Rock climbing scares me. I can only do it indoors. And I do do crazy things, like just letting my husband book first class tickets to Sydney with a 10-minute notice. Does that count? It was an amazing deal, and he didn’t want to pass it up and I was not going to be the one to turn down a trip of a lifetime. Crazy crazy crazy!!! Love your writing voice.

Hi Farnoosh.

That sure is not me in that picture, but it might as well be me, because I was hiking down this steep area a few days ago. It was a pretty unsafe area, as a matter of fact.

That sure is crazy on 10 minutes of notice. That does count. Talk about allowing something on the spur of the moment. I’m sure he appreciated it~ Thanks about my writing voice. It is improving as I improve it.
